Functionality and Safety
A variable frequency drive controls the speed of an electric motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the input power. This enables energy-efficient operation and smooth starts and stops, which reduces mechanical wear on pumps, fans, and conveyor belts. Built-in features such as Safe Torque Off (STO) enhance safety in the facility, while integrated EMC filters ensure stable operation in industrial environments. For demanding environments, rugged models with an IP66 rating are available.
Energy Savings and Operating Efficiency
Modern variable-frequency drives offer advanced energy-saving features such as Eco mode, sleep modes, and built-in PID control. By optimizing the operation of pumps, fans, conveyors, and compressors, both energy consumption and mechanical wear on the equipment are reduced—features that can deliver noticeable cost savings as early as the first year of operation compared to traditional solutions.
Digitization and Integration
Configuration and monitoring have been simplified with support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile apps. Communication protocols such as PROFINET, Modbus RTU, and EtherCAT enable seamless integration into automation systems. Modern drives can also be configured via a web interface or integrated into environments such as the Siemens TIA Portal—from simple machines to complex industrial processes.
