Worm gears are a simple type of gear where the input shaft is a steel screw that screws onto a bronze wheel. A worm gear is always an angular gear - the output shaft goes across the input shaft. The gear ratio is normally between 1:5 and 1:100. It is possible to combine two worm gears into a double worm gear. The gear ratio can then be very high. The efficiency is normally low. The bronze wheel slides on the screw with relatively high friction. Efficiency decreases with increasing gear ratio. Lower input speeds reduce the efficiency.
CUGGLE WHEELS
Gears are single or multi-stage gears with two gears in each stage. Gears are available as straight, bevel and spur gears. A gear stage normally does not shift down more than about 6-7 times. A two-stage gear then has a maximum ratio of around 1:50 and a three-stage gear around 1:350.
